Touring Bicycles
The two most important considerations when purchasing or building your touring bike are:
Touring bike frames are typically heavier that recreational road bike frames because they are made to carry lots of extra weight. They are usually made from lightweight steel or aluminum. If you are planning on carrying your equipment in panniers attached to racks on your bike, you should consider purchasing a steel frame instead of aluminum.
Touring bike wheels require the same considerations as touring bike frames. Touring bike wheels are not as light and nimble as racing or recreational bike wheels. They are heavier, more sturdy and built to last. You need to make sure that the wheels you purchase for your touring bike will be able to carry you and your equipment for many miles. Investing in a strong, durable set of touring bike wheels will save you many headaches down the road.
