Wheels
There are two components that make up a sturdy, long-lasting touring bike wheel: a strong hub and a solid rim.
Hubs:
The industry leader in bike touring hubs is Phil Wood. These handmade hubs are the strongest and smoothest hubs on the market for touring bike wheels. However, these top-of-the-line hubs are also more expensive than most, ranging from $200 to $450. Other models that are less expensive, but still durable and long-lasting include:
- White Industries - $150-$250
- DT Swiss 350s - $50-$300
Rims:
There is a wide array of options for touring bicyclists when it comes to rims. Adventure cyclists have been known to use rims designed for moutain bikes, cyclocross bikes, recreational bikes, and even hybrid bikes. The type of rim you choose primarily depends on the terrain where you will be riding and the style of touring bike frame you chose. The two models listed below fit a broad range of touring bike frame and provide the strongest, most-durable rim for on-road touring.
