GPS Systems
The real power of GPS is in its ability to pinpoint a rider's location. But don't forget the many other capabilities of GPS systems.
Before leaving on an extended ride, you can store information about hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, stores, bike shops, and thousands of other waypoints. Not to mention, one GPS can hold hundreds of maps, saving an incredible amount of weight and bulk that would be required for paper maps.
One drawback to GPS systems is price. The technology is still relatively new and prices can be steep. Additionally, not all GPS systems come pre-loaded with maps. Make sure you know how much extra the necessary maps for your ride will cost when you are creating your tour budget. For example, GPS systems purchased in North America won't necessarily include maps of Europe; that will require an additional purchase.
We have provided two GPS options below representing high-quality systems at varying price points.
